#breakthebias

As we near the end of March, a month where we reflect on the courage of women in past generations to afford us the opportunities we have today, I have been taking a moment to ruminate on the campaigns and discussions this month that have called attention to the inequities that still exist. Here are a five notable ones for me (in no specific order):

1. #AddtheM campaign by the YWCA that asks us all to stop treating men’s sports as the default for all sports and leaving women’s sports out of the conversation.

2. #RespectHighHeels by Roccamoore used powerful pictures to reflect the lack of gender diversity in boardrooms in Denmark. They created limited edition shoes with all profits going towards a 2-day free education event to support people to step into a boardroom.

3. We Are Not Equal campaign by the Alberta Women’s Health Foundation brought to life a powerful letter written 7 years ago by a male engineering student Jared Mauldin to the women in his class, highlighting the many invisible obstacles that women have to overcome to reach the same level as men. “You have already conquered far more to be in this field than I will ever face”. AWHF transformed this narrative into a powerful video to highlight the health gaps that women continue to face.

4. @paygapapp, an innovative Twitter bot created by Francesca Lawson, that re-tweeted pay gaps for any employers posting on International Women’s Day. This highlighted the tremendous gaps between words and actions, with many organizations only going surface deep on their commitment to be inclusive workplaces.

5. Smart Bodies Anthem by FemTech organization Elvie celebrates women’s biologically complex bodies and ‘high tech anatomy’. Their music video, co-written by Eva Lazarus, aims to dismantle negative and objectifying narratives around women’s bodies.
